Libearty Sanctuary is situated in Zărneşti, near Brasov, and is part of the project “Save the Captive Bear” – the largest project in Europe for the rescue, care, and welfare of the brown bear initiated by World Animal Protection. The sanctuary has 69 hectares of oak forest, includes a few pools, and provides food and medical care for its inhabitants.
Since 2005, over 130 bears have been rescued. You can pay them a visit only accompanied by a guide. The welfare of the bears is the only priority here. Nevertheless, meeting the brown bear in its natural environment is an experience you won’t forget. And it’s a rare experience as well, as most of the brown bear population in Europe has gone. Romania is home to approximately 60% of Europe’s brown bears.
